From & Fragment
Inspired by brutalist architecture, Form & Fragment is a series of images of architectural details of concrete buildings. The images have been manipulated and turned into circular forms. The forms have been overlaid with photographs of various stone textures. The manipulation relies on the precise nature of digital tools to reshape straight lines into curves to suggest organic shapes reminiscent of natural spiral forms such as those of snail shells and pinecones.
Concrete is a fascinating material, derived from natural resources and produced at a huge environmental cost. Its qualities can be compared to materials found in nature, being able to mould like lava and set like rock. Brutalist architecture often confronts and contrasts nature, choosing to emphasise mass and the unadorned truth of manufactured material. Form & Fragment attempts a reconciliation between the rigid human-made and the flowing organic.
